Extension FAQ

OK so here is the promised Hair Extension post!

A little background, in case you don't know anything about extensions:
A hair extension is a bundle of hair that has been sewn together on one end, allowing you to fix that end to your head in a variety of ways. An extension is usually called a "track" or "weft" and can be made from human hair or animal such as yak. Extensions come in thousands of different shades, textures, and lengths.

please excuse my grandma bags under my eyes and my naked lips.

- What type of extensions do you use?
My first set of extensions were glue in. Basically you measure a track to specifically fit your head, and then glue it on to your roots using a special hair glue. They usually last about 3-6 months. Glue in extensions can be very harmful to your natural hair, causing damage and breaks which is why I switched to clip in extensions. The track is sewn onto a special clip and then clipped onto your head, underneath a few layers of hair. Clips in can be taken out whenever you want ( I take mine out every night) and usually last quite a bit longer than glue in's, about 1-2 years. You can also have "bonded" extensions, in which you have teeny tiny little bundles of a track bonded to teeny tiny bundles of your own hair. It's the most expensive and the most time consuming, hence why I skipped right over that sucker and have never looked back.

" Is your naturally straight or curly? How do you get your natural hair to match the extensions?
My hair naturally annoying. It has a tiny wave to it, in random spots. Usually I just take the straightner and add to whatever my hair chose to do on it's own. The extensions are super easy to curl, so I just curl them with my natural hair. I learned that it's easiest to pick the color of extensions you want, and then dye your hair to match. Currently, my hair is L'OREAL 5N from Sally's, and the extensions are a 3B 18".

- are your extensions human hair? Doesn't that gross you out?
Yes my extensions are 100% human hair. Using hair from a yak grosses me out more than the idea of someone else's hair on my head. Once you just accept the fact that some woman sold her hair and you are now wearing it, you get over it pretty fast. I honestly don't even think about that anymore.

- Can you wash etc your extensions?
Sure! It's normal hair, so I can straighten it, curl it, wash it, dye it- whatever! However, extensions are just like our hair: they can get damaged. In fact, extensions can be damaged much faster since they don't have the benefits of natural oils from our body. Because of that, I use Moroccan oil on the ends every day, and I try not to curl them very often. Also, I never ever wear them in the pool and I try not to wear them when I know I"ll be outside a lot or sweating profusely. You don't want those suckers to smell.

- Does your head feel funny with all that stuff up in there?
BAHAHA no, not really. I'm probably more conscious of my head than normal when I put them on for the first time in a while ( I took a break from extensions for a year this last time). Like my head might feel heavy or I'm kind of worried about the clips showing, but you get used to that as well. I do start to notice that my head will hurt if I wear them for an exceptionally long time.

- How do you get the extensions put in? Where can you buy them from?
I make my own extensions. I've been doing it for so long, and tried so many different ways, that I've kind of come up with my own way.  You can buy extensions and the supplies from any wig shop or beauty supply store. If you live in the OKC area, I buy mine from Queen's Beauty Supply on 23rd. Sally's Beauty Supply also carries them, but they're cheap and I wouldn't suggest using them. You can also make an appointment with a salon that does extensions.

How much do extensions cost?
The actual extensions cost around $75 and up ( and up and up and up).  You only need one packet to do your head, and you'll probably have some left over. Getting your extensions done at a salon can cost anywhere from $300-$1000, depending on what you get done and how long it takes.Since I knew I could figure out how to wear extensions myself, and have never (and probably will never) have that much money lying around to waste on my hair, I chose to make my own.

If you have any other questions, fire away! I'd be happy to answer them. I also make custom-fitted clip-in extension sets. Email me for more info

  1. You should SO do a tutorial on making them yourself! I would LOVE to learn! I recently purchased a set of clip-in's off Ebay - Huge mistake, by the way. The source I bought from claimed to sell 100% Human Remy Hair - Liars. The second I got them I put them in & went to curl them & BAM! Melted all over the place. I can wear them as long as I keep them straight but it looks terrible because I have such damaged hair right now & therefore a terrible hair cut/breakage. I would love to make my own set with real human hair!

  3. The only time I ever tried extensions was when I was in a musical (Camelot). I haven't tried them since. Your hair looks so natural with them in! I don't think I did that good of a job when I wore them...
